Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice comes into force (2/10/23)
As the Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice comes into force today (2nd October 2023)The code comes into force on 2nd October but how does that change the working practices for our members?
Any organisation or individual submitting evidence where the Code applies must be Accredited by UKAS for that Activity and declare that they are compliant. Otherwise, a Non-compliant declaration should be made, stating mitigating factors, such as validation methods and experience of the individuals concerned. The CPS and Criminal Justice System will then assess accordingly.
It is envisaged that a lot of members particularly on Defence/Legal Aid work, will not yet be Accredited and this has been communicated to CPS and Judiciary. It may in the long term be advantageous to progress the journey to Accreditation for some of our members and we would recommend exploring this. Please see my previous CEO blogs, our video with the Regulator and articles on the member platform which give useful links, or drop me a line on info@csofs.org if you need further clarity.
Check out some of the guidance available on the Regulator’s website.
