For Associates
Associate (ACSFS) is the membership category for those who are already Affiliates or Student members of the Society, have graduated within the last 2 years and are still studying or are in the early stages of their forensic science career (less than 3 years).
Associate – for new professionals
Associate carries the post-nominal ACSFS. Associate Membership provides a clear and direct route through to Membership (MCSFS) and brings the Society into line with other professional bodies who have a graduate career progression route in place for their subject-specific discipline.
(Associate is a transitory category of membership and cannot be retained for more than 7 years – CSFS Bye Laws 2020)
Upgrading from Affiliate to Associate
Upgrading from Affiliate to Associate
You are eligible for Associate membership if
- (within the last 2 years) you have completed a bachelor’s degree in forensic-science or a closely-related discipline AND/OR
- you are studying for a higher degree (MSc, MPhil or PhD) in forensic-science or a closely-related discipline OR
- you are a graduate currently working in a forensics role but have less than 3 years experience in forensics.
The upgrade process is simple and involves sending in your CV/academic certificates – those who are working will be asked to pay an application fee (currently £15) and, once their upgrade is approved, a top-up subscription (currently £35) to take them to the Associate rate. Those who are studying or looking for work will be eligible for concessionary rates.

Undergraduates may request an upgrade from student membership as soon as their course has finished. Affiliates may apply to be Associates at any time.
All we require is that you send proof that you have completed an undergraduate course. If you have completed or are taking a course that is accredited by the Society you won’t need to do any more. If not we will also ask for the names and email addresses of two referees who know of your studies and current work/study situation.
