CEO blog – Changing landscape?

As we speed into the third month of 2023 (already?) it is becoming apparent that the landscape in forensics is changing. Paired with a more expensive economy, smaller companies and sole traders may be feeling the pinch in both time and money.

With the Regulator’s Code moving through parliament and looking on course to be implemented in October, we are seeing activity on Accreditation ramp up with UKAS planning assessments to assist those Forces and forensic science providers that are already operating under the previous code to gain accreditation under the new code, as soon as possible.

So where does that leave members within organisations that aren’t yet compliant with the Code or smaller providers and SMEs that have not yet engaged with the system? If a sole operator, expert witness or SME is carrying out a Forensic Science Activity (as defined by the Code) they will have to prove that they are on the journey toward accreditation, and it is likely that the justice system will take this into account when evidence is put forward.

All feedback from the Forensic Science Regulator, UKAS, The Home Office, and The Ministry of Justice point toward operation under a QMS system being a vital part of this journey toward accreditation.

One benefit to SME’s of being a member of The Society is that we can invest in what is really important to our members – or form associations with partners in other industries to deliver further benefits. Our GQMS provides a practical, straightforward quality system for as reasonable price as possible, reflecting our view that SMEs and sole traders need all the help they can get on this. As part of the GQMS user relationship we also offer ‘support days’ with our experts, as well as templates of all key documents – as we appreciate that not all of our members will be quality experts!

We also partner with WTJ, who provide beneficial rates on Professional Indemnity Insurance for our professional level members, to give peace of mind in all of your operations – from a provider that understands the forensic industry and can discuss your specific needs and recommend a policy.

In this changing landscape of Regulation and increased costs, we want to help and support members to maintain sustainable businesses and retain the expertise in the industry! If you want more information on any of our benefits to members, please visit the website or drop me an email on info@csofs.org.
