The Society’s new Research Seminar Series aims to provide timely opportunities for practitioners, educators and researchers working in criminal justice contexts to come together, learn from and interact with authors of recently published Science & Justice journal articles.

Each online seminar will last approximately one hour, where two or three speakers will summarise their publication and give live attendees the opportunity to ask questions about their work. Seminar presentations are intended for diverse audiences and it is hoped that these events will further enhance continual professional development, initiate new research and facilitate the implementation of innovative methods, or changes in policy and practice.

Details for the speakers for this first session are below.

Speaker - Professor Ivan Birch

Professor Ivan Birch is Consultant Expert Witness in forensic gait analysis with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Emeritus Professor of Human Sciences. Ivan graduated in 1978 with a BSc Joint Honours in Science from the University of Salford, gained an MSc in Human Biology from the University of Loughborough in 1980, and was awarded a PhD in Biomechanics by the University of Brighton in 2007. He has extensive experience of teaching biomechanics, anatomy, physiology and research methods, and is a Member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences. In 2015 he was awarded the status of the Chartered Scientist by the Science Council for his work in gait analysis as evidence. Ivan is included on the National Crime Agency Specialist Operations Centre Expert Witness Advisers Database in the UK, and has more than 40 years’ experience of gait analysis.

Title - The development and testing of the Sheffield Features of Gait tool

This presentation will report the findings of a collaborative project undertaken by the forensic team based at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, UK, the University of Brighton, UK, and the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. The project investigated the repeatability, reproducibility and validity of the use of the Sheffield Features of Gait Tool to identify and record features of gait in the forensic context. This was the first time that a features of gait tool had been tested in the forensic context, and this work represents an important step forward in the standardisation of professional practice, and the development of objective decision making strategies for use in comparative gait analysis.

Speaker - Dr. Praveen Kumar Yadav

Dr. Praveen Kumar Yadav is currently part of a research group at Punjabi University, Patiala, India. Praveen has a bachelor's and masters in forensic sciences and completed a Ph.D. in forensic chemistry last November and the topic of the doctoral research was "Forensic characterization of alcoholic beverages using Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry". Praveen has worked extensively on the identification of licit and illicit alcoholic beverages and their geographical origin. Other fields of research include analysis of inhalants, over-the-counter drugs, antidepressants, pesticides, etc. Praveen has also worked on the analysis and identification of trace evidence - especially cosmetic evidence, essential oils, and inks among others and specializes in GC-MS, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Title - Analysis of Inhalants using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS):Current and future

This talk will cover the threat inhalants pose to our society and why it is important to identify them; the problems faced during the analysis of inhalants especially when found on substrates; what has been done in our reported study and what are the future aspirations we are hoping to accomplish.

The event will be held on 9th February 12.00-13.00 GMT.
