Certificates of Professional Competence (CPC)
Why did we get involved?
There is a widely recognised need to ensure that the quality of forensic expert evidence is of a suitable
standard. When the Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners (CRFP) was abolished, the Society was
approached by a small group of Forensic Podiatrists who had previously been registered with CRPF and who were
looking for an alternative. The Society worked with them to develop a robust, fit for purpose certification model that
tested their knowledge and competence to practice as a Forensic Podiatrist. Discussions within the group and within
the wider forensic community gave the consensus view that there should be standard model that could be applied to
the testing of competence in all Forensic Disciplines. In each case the test should be designed to test the competence
of an individual to carry out their specific role.

CPC for CSIs
The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (CSFS) is delighted to formally announce the introduction of a Certificate of
Professional Competency scheme for CSIs. CSFS aims to work with Police Forces across the country on the implementation of
a three year programme to assess and manage competence and professional development of its CSIs. As part of this initiative
three years' membership is funded: a great way to show investment in employees and allow everyone to benefit from the
implementation of ISO 17020.
The process is the same for everyone, the practical assessment is tailored to assess your competence to carry out your role.
The aim is to demonstrate the skills you have and identify areas where the Force, as a whole, should be supporting your
The diagram below is an overview of the 3 year programme.
The process will take 3 years with a full
reassessment in year 4. By that time everyone
should be in a position to work towards
attaining Chartered Forensic Practitioner
status. The CSFS have recently piloted this
process and more information will be available
on the website soon. http://www.csofs.org/
