Professional Background
Most of Sue's professional career has been spent as an analytical chemist, starting with the analysis of foodstuffs in a Public Analyst Laboratory. This was followed by investigating pollution incidents using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques. GC-MS has been the main thread of her subsequent posts in a Government Food Science laboratory and in academia. In her post in the Government Laboratory, she was involved in developing methods in support of EU Directives on food contact materials and regulations on food contact materials at the Council of Europe. As a Senior Lecturer at King’s College London Sue was responsible for the chemistry side of the MSc Forensic Science programme and developed a research programme in forensic science, with particular expertise in the chemistry of fingerprints and in the use of nanoparticle-antibody conjugates to detect human body fluids, obtaining funding from EPSRC to support this research. Her research has involved working in association with colleagues from the Forensic Science Service, the Metropolitan Police Forensic Services and other forensic science providers. She was co-editor of the first edition of Clarke's Analytical Forensic Toxicology (Jickells and Negrusz eds. Pharmaceutical Press, 2008)
Sue is currently co-ordinating a skills training programme for PhD students at the University of East Anglia.
