Professional Background
Sue Carney is an experienced forensic biologist, employed by the former Forensic Science Service until 2011, when she established Ethos Forensics, an independent forensic science consultancy and training company. Sue’s areas of expertise include DNA profiling, encompassing DNA mixture interpretation and Low Template DNA profiling, and body fluid evidence interpretation. She has extensive experience of complex criminal casework, including a variety of cold case investigations. Sue has presented expert testimony at Crown Court on many occasions. Her areas of special interest are the forensic investigation of sexual offences and the application of quality standards in forensic science.
Committed to forensic science education and inspiring the next generation of expert witnesses, Sue teaches forensic science at the University of Central Lancashire where she is module tutor for ‘The Application of Forensic Science’ third year undergraduate module. She was lead judge at the first ever forensic science WorldSkills competition in 2013 and continues to support the WorldSkills programme. She has contributed two chapters to a forensic science education text book, to be published by Wiley later in 2016.
In addition to her scientific expertise, Sue is a BSI-trained internal auditor committed to implementing and monitoring quality. She was site quality lead for body fluids at the FSS Chorley laboratory and now provides quality management support to a variety of clients, alongside her other casework consultancy, having been instrumental in assisting the gaining and maintenance of their accreditation to ISO IEC 17025:2005.
Sue is a member of the Home Office Centre for Applied Science and Technology Forensic DNA Expert Community, an expert volunteer for human rights charity, Reprieve, and sit son the executive board of the Forensic and Policing Services Association.
CSFS Background
Sue has been a professional member of the Chartered Society for many years and regularly attends conferences and other events. She has spoken at the annual student conference and is a member of the FAPSA standards working group which, in conjunction with the Chartered Society, are investigating feasible routes to accreditation for SMEs and sole traders working in forensic science.
