Professional Background
Greg graduated with a BSc (Hons) Forensic Science degree from the University of Glamorgan in 2012, and went straight into working at the Olympics as a Medical Supervisor. He then began his career as an Auxiliary Nurse at the main hospital in Swindon, where he also undertook a secondary role as an assessor for Junior Doctors, and medical students on placement. He then transferred to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he became a Biomedical Scientist Associate - specialising in Neuropathology. He worked in the Diagnostic laboratory, which involved carrying out both paediatric and adult Post Mortem examinations and photography, with general, forensic and neuro-pathologists.
In this role, Greg was able to increase his experience and knowledge with evidential medical photography and documentation, whilst having to understand and comply with various legislation, primarily the Human Tissue Act (HTA) 2004 and the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) 1984. He was also responsible for Human Tissue handling, preparation, dissection and tracking, whilst ensuring compliance with the HTA and liaising with the Human Tissue Authority and UK wide Police Forces. He has been required to maintain competence and compliance with ISO17025 and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) standards since.
At present, Greg is a Forensic Fingerprint Technician with Thames Valley Police. Along with working to, and complying with ISO17025, UKAS and the Forensic Science Regulator's Codes of Practice (FSR CoP), Greg has become the laboratory lead for ensuring Standard Operating Procedures for the department are current and fully compliant with ISO, UKAS and the FSR - whilst ensuring staff become fully competent to work within the relevant areas of scope. He has also taken the lead on devising a brand-new training programme for new and existing staff within the department, which streamlines and formalises the training and competency processes required to undertake live work - all of which were accepted and commended by the relevant governing bodies and service managers.
Alongside his Forensic role, Greg is a fully operational Police Sergeant with Wiltshire Special Constabulary. As a supervisor, he is not only a point of contact for legal issues, but also required to ensure officers are fully trained and competent to carry our their role and that they work to a high standard. Greg carries our training for both special constables and regular officers in the field of forensics.
He has attended numerous crime scenes, which have ranged from everyday volume crime, to murders, suicides and fatal road traffic collisions - many of these have required formal forensic strategies, which Greg has often been called upon to give advice for and assist with co-ordinating. His scene experience extends to working alongside multi-agency emergency personnel and various police officer ranks and staff.
As with the CSFS, Greg also holds Professional Memberships with the Royal Societies of Chemistry and Biology. With his knowledge and experience in both criminal law and forensic laboratory and scene work, Greg hopes to bring these to the Society and be able to assist with current and up and coming forensic professionals.
