Senior Forensic Collision Investigator (North Yorkshire Police) |
Professional Background
Dave joined North Yorkshire Police in 1986, quickly developing a keen interest in the investigation of road collisions. He joined the Road s Policing (Traffic) department in 1990 and since that time has investigated many fatal and serious injury collisions.
In 2000 Dave became a specialist Forensic Collision Investigator and Reconstructionist and since then has investigated several hundred such collisions as well as conducting investigations with the HSE and assisted the AAIB and RAIB at air and rail crashes, respectively. Additionally, Dave has been involved with serious crime investigations including murder scenes.
As a result Dave has attended and given expert witness evidence at Crown, Magistrates and Coroner’s courts on many occasions as well as Civil matters. The varied nature of work within the county has meant that Dave has built up a wealth of experience in all disciplines of collision investigation. A significant part of the work involves high speed collisions, be that with car and/or motorcycles, with the resultant analysis of large collision scenes, widespread evidential scatter, and the necessity for accurate capture of the scene data in order that authoritative assessment can be made of the collision scene. This necessitates a variety of data capture techniques including surveying and 3d Laser Scanning. These techniques are used, not only to provide an objective data capture process, but following the recording, recovery and retention of evidence, to interrogate that data, model collision scenes and circumstances and present findings.
Dave became the Senior Collision Investigator in 2011, responsible for the management and development of the team, quality assurance and overseeing complex investigations including IPCC. This involved drawing up forensic investigation strategies as well as continuing to practice in the field. He represents the NE region to the NPCC National Senior Collision Investigators. Dave has presented at a number of international conferences. Dave is honoured to act as an assessor for the CSFS
