Professional Background
Having worked as a student employee on casework at the Northern Ireland Forensic Science Laboratories in the late 1970s, Carolyn set up one of the first courses in Forensic Science for law students in the country when she started work as a lecturer at Bristol Polytechnic in 1984. She continued to liaise with local forensic scientists, forensic pathologists and police scientific investigations staff over the years as they contributed to this course on Forensic Science. It was some time before universities started offering BSc programmes in Forensic Science, but Carolyn led the development of these at what had become the University of the West of England, Bristol, with the first such programme starting in 2001. This was successfully accredited by the Forensic Science Society (as it was then) at the first opportunity in 2006, and Carolyn has been the Subject Group Leader of the Forensic, Analytical and Chemical Sciences subject group from 2001-2015.
She continues to teach a wide range of topics from fingerprinting, forensic chemistry and toxicology to the interpretation and communication of forensic evidence, and pursues research collaborations with local forensic industries. She has recently become a UWE Learning and Teaching Fellow and has developed a range of interactive learning and teaching activities in forensic science in the virtual world of Second Life®.
CSFS Background
Carolyn has been an active member of the Society since 1988, and was most recently involved with the development of the Pre-Employment Assessment of Competence (PEAC) Scheme.
