Forensic Collision Investigator - GBB(UK) Ltd |
Professional Background
Ady Stevens is a Forensic Collision Investigator at GBB. He has investigated over 1000 road traffic collisions since the 1980s and became a dedicated full time Forensic Collision Investigator in 2000. During this phase of his career he has been the primary investigator for nearly 100 fatal and over 150 serious, catastrophic injury road traffic collisions involving heavy goods vehicles, passenger cars, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians and highway structures.
He has also assisted or mentored other investigators with the investigation of many other such incidents. He has harvested evidence at major crime scenes together with assisting the Health and Safety Executive at serious industrial accidents and the Civil Aviation Authority Air Investigation Branch at a number of fatal aircraft crashes.
Ady has given evidence as an expert witness in court for civil, criminal and coronial proceedings on numerous occasions and has worked on investigations with neighbouring police forces and the Independent Police Complaints Commission and other external agencies.
Ady's expertise covers all aspects of collision investigation; however, he specialises in serious incidents involving pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, and large goods vehicles. As well as 'traditional' investigation techniques, he is able to provide laser surveys and 3-dimensional models of incident scenes and damaged vehicles.
Ady routinely physically inspects vehicles and assesses the damage sustained, considering the consistency of the damage with the laws of physics and the incident circumstances. He has observed full scale crash testing where he has viewed the dismantled crash vehicles to investigate structural changes due to impact. He has experience of driving motorcycles, goods vehicles and track laying vehicles. He has experienced being an occupant in a collision vehicle at both low and high speeds.
He has been trained in the theory and use of radar, air tube, laser, lastec and a variety of time and distance computing speed detection devices. He regularly attends seminars and reads research papers as part of his CPD and has been selected as one of a small national team, set up under the guidance of the Forensic Regulator, to assess Forensic Collision Investigation Experts for accreditation. Ady has been involved in many areas of transport related research including: pedestrian collision dynamics (using dummies); low and high speed vehicle-vehicle crash testing; incident specific vehicle testing and reconstructions; visibility studies; video reconstructions and driver reaction simulator testing.
Ady has published and presented many papers since 2009.
CSFS Background
Ady became a Professional Member of the ‘Forensic Science Society’ in 2013. Since 2014, after the Society earned its ‘Chartered’ status, he has been an active member of a CSFS working party looking at Forensic Collision Investigation within the organisation and especially the accreditation of expert witnesses.
